An Edwardian Sunday…. Birmingham Heritage Week

September 21st,10:30 am - 3:30 pm
George Willis Price, The tower of St Mary and St Margaret’s Church, c.1866.

A Sunday …

what it might have been like 120 -130 years ago, if you  lived or worked at a grand Hall like Castle Bromwich.

By permission from the historic hall; members of Garden’s staff, visitors and the congregation of St. Mary’s and St. Margaret’s will process from the Hall into the Church, following in the footsteps of a usual Sunday morning service that the household would have enjoyed.

The idea is that we will be in as much costume as we can, entering the church in processional form with the family pews reserved for them in a modern Upstairs/Downstairs re-enactment. This will then be followed by a Songs of Praise service, taking us from medieval music, right through to the hymns of the early Twentieth Century.

You will certainly recognise some, with Lord of the Dance and the Coventry Carol likely to make an appearance, as well as Christ the Lord is Risen Indeed. Effectively operating like the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, it will be a fast-paced, non-Eucharistic service, where each hymn will be followed by a short reading or extract. It will be a chance to really get your vocal cords working!

Please do come in costume (or just a hat if you can manage it!), centred on the period of 1890-1910 – don’t worry, we won’t comment on historical accuracy!

Once the service has finished, people will be invited to attend tours of the historic church and join informal walking tours of the baroque Gardens. We are hoping that this will help you to understand the historic links of the entire heritage site as one entity.

Please wear sensible clothing. We will not cancel the event if the weather is poor, but the paths throughout the site can become muddy so sturdy footwear is advised.

Dogs are not welcome in the Church, but are in the Gardens on short leads, but please take any mess away with you.

The Church service will go ahead whatever the weather.
