Sustainability at Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens

At the Gardens, caring for our historic landscape goes hand in hand with caring for the environment. We are committed to making sustainable choices wherever possible, helping to protect the Gardens for future generations while reducing our environmental impact.

Across the site, we collect and use rainwater to help care for our gardens, reducing our reliance on mains water, while solar panels on one of our buildings generate renewable energy to support our day-to-day operations.

We believe in supporting local businesses and reducing food miles, which is why many of the products in our café and shop are sourced from local suppliers. You’ll also find a range of produce made right here in the Gardens, including our own apple juice, jams, pickles and honey, celebrating the harvest from our historic orchards and apiaries.

Our commitment to a circular economy can be seen in our popular second-hand book shed, where visitors can donate and purchase pre-loved books, giving them a new home while helping to raise funds for the Gardens.

Protecting wildlife is central to everything we do. Through habitat creation, conservation projects and careful management, we work to enhance biodiversity across the Gardens, creating a haven for birds, pollinators, insects and other native species.

Our gardening team follows chemical-free and peat-free principles wherever possible, using environmentally responsible methods to care for our plants and historic landscape. In our shop, we also encourage visitors to reduce waste by offering refillable household products, including soaps and cleaning sprays, helping to cut down on single-use plastic.

Even the everyday essentials reflect our values. Throughout the Gardens we use sustainable toilet and kitchen rolls from Naked Sprout, a company committed to producing environmentally responsible paper products with minimal impact on the planet.

Every visit, every purchase and every donation helps support these initiatives, allowing us to continue preserving both our historic Gardens and the natural environment that makes them so special.

Refillables – in the shop

We have teamed up with Miniml, the Yorkshire based friendly chemical company, to get access to a small range of eco cleaning products: washing up liquid, hand soap and surface cleaner and customers can come to the shop to fill up their own bottles.

Anji, one of the Gardens’ Front of House team said:
“We make sure we use eco-safe products when we do the cleaning here, so it really makes sense to share that option with our visitors.”

General Manager Glynis Powell agreed,
“Like us, our visitors want to do the best by the planet and ‘refillables’ are a great way to
save on single use plastics and too many expensive shopping journeys. Visitors tell us they just can’t find anywhere locally where they can, so we’re trying to change that.”

People can bring their own bottles or get one from us that they can use again. Come round sometime and join in the circular economy.

Help Us Purchase a New Grounds Maintenance Tractor

Support our appeal to replace our ageing grounds maintenance tractor with a modern, reliable machine.

Keeping Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens looking its best takes hard work throughout the year. From maintaining lawns and pathways to caring for the wider landscape, our small tractor is an essential part of the day-to-day work that keeps the Gardens safe, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.

Unfortunately, our current tractor has reached the end of its working life. It breaks down regularly, requires frequent and costly repairs, and is becoming increasingly unreliable. Time spent dealing with breakdowns means less time caring for the Gardens, while ongoing repair costs take valuable funds away from conservation and restoration projects.

We’re raising funds to purchase a new compact tractor with mower attachments, giving our gardening team the reliable equipment they need to care for this nationally important historic site efficiently and sustainably.

Every donation, whatever the amount, will help us invest in equipment that will benefit the Gardens for years to come. Your support will help keep our lawns, orchards and open spaces looking their best, ensuring visitors can continue to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens.
