Join us in the Gardens on Saturday 18th July for some exciting and thrilling full contact combat sport in clanking armour.

Birmingham Medieval Combat are a martial arts sports team basing their activities on the foot combat tournaments of the 14-15th Century, similar to Jousts.

On this day they will be treating us to some skillful duels and noisy group battles – all unscripted ‘ouch’- in the Gardens.

Across the day there will be plenty of opportunities to talk and ask questions of the combattants, to learn about theior skills and techniques and to understand the growing popularity of this modern version of the ancient sport.

Likely shape of the day –  subject to change

• 11am – Duels and Weapons Combat demonstration
• 11.30 -1pm – Prebookable Adult Beginners Class (10 spaces only) BOOK HERE
• 1.30pm – Armoured martial arts and group battle
• 3pm – Group battle and …… eek free for all skirmish

The BMC team will be onsite all day offering adhoc fights,  answering questions and showcasing their weapons and equipment.

Young people’s interest in wildlife (or even in Harry Potter) just grows and grows.

Now, your young enthusiast has the opportunity to get close to these wonderful creatures and to learn how to hold them safely on the hand (with a glove on, obviously!)

Our adult Falconry and Owl sessions have a great following here in the Gardens and now Tora’s Falconry can offer small groups their own hands-on experience during the school holidays.

With just 12 child places per 90 minute session, each child get an opportunity to learn about the birds, see them fly and get a chance to fly a small owl or falcon.

These sessions are suitable for almost any age, but we suggest at least 5 years or over . (NB The 90 minute sessions do have a break, but it is still the length of two school lessons!)

Each child ticket INCLUDES a place for ONE accompanying adult.

Children must be accompanied.

You can buy one additional adult ticket(maximum 2 adults per child) – click on AddOns, after you have bought your main ticket.

The weekend’s events:

Across both days, joins us and expert interactive history buffs History Adventures and Medieval musicians, Merrie Noyse for a day of hands-on history.

Sir Stephen de Blennerhayset and Lady Eleanor are ready to take you on a journey to the high life of the Middle Ages.
Three shows across the day, will immerse participants and spectators into the world of the Medieval Great Hall. Learn how to become a knight with sword-in-hand in Knight School, step to the 14th century beat with our Medieval Dance show, and learn how castles work whilst building (and destroying) them in Castle Siege.

The Shows: morning, lunchtime and afternoon.

Knight School – 30 mins

Learn about what it takes to be a Knight, both on and off the battlefield. See if you can follow instructions as you discover how a child went through the process to become a Knight. If you perform well, and show proficiency with a sword, then you might be granted the greatest honour most could hope for in the Medieval world and be granted your very own Knighthood!

Medieval Dance – 30 mins

Knights wouldn’t always be at battle. Sometimes they liked to throw massive feasts and banquets to impress their peers, and what better way to impress them than by showing them how good you are on the dance floor! Learn real medieval dances and party like it’s 1369!

Castle Siege – 45 mins

Build a castle, learning how they are constructed in the process, what is called what, and some of the ingenious ideas used to defend the fortresses of the Medieval world. Building the castle, however, is only half the fun. Once it is finished, learn about some of the ways that you can attack a castle before besieging it with catapults.

Lawn Games All Day

For many visitors it is the games that we provide that are the highlight. Our games are all Medieval games that transport players back in time. We fill our Games Arena with many different games, that are relevant to the period, that visitors can play at their leisure and return as much as they want.

Our Games Arena gives visitors something to enjoy from the moment the gates open to the end of the day. Some games are simple, others have more intricate rules, and this spread means that there is something for all.

Wandering Troubadours

Merrie Noyse will add the soundtrack to the day, wandering throughout the Gardens with their Medieval instruments, bringing the sounds of the Middle Ages to these Baroque gardens. Won’t their music sound fabulous in the Music Room?

Fees: entry fees apply, £6 for adults and £5 for concessions (over 65s or full-time students), and under 16s are free! The Knights and Dragon Trail will be £1 for under 16s.

Castle Bromwich Hall and Gardens represent a rare example of a 17th century Jacobean country house, complete with its original garden setting and parkland. Situated only five miles from Birmingham City centre, the hall is now in private ownership, but 40 acres of historic garden and the parkland are managed by Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens Trust. The site contains a mosaic of habitats including formal gardens, orchards, woodland, wetlands and grasslands making it ideal for all year round foraging!

Our Foraging Courses begin with a short introduction to Wild Food UK, what to expect from your day and a brief summary of the general countryside codes, including our Foraging Code.

Heading off at a leisurely pace, your instructor will teach you how to safely identify the different species of edible and poisonous plants and mushrooms that you discover. This exploration will take about 2.5hrs, during which we’ll take a break for a homemade refreshment, such as our Hogweed & Wild Garlic Soup or Elderflower Champagne!

Then it’s back to the meeting point for a tasty wild food meal. This will include a selection of foraged homemade treats created by your instructor, and a dish made with what we have collected during the walk.

All of our food is seasonal, so what you are served depends on what is growing at that time of year. In Spring we will be making use of the fresh wild greens and in Autumn, the array of tasty wild mushrooms that the area has to offer.

You will receive a comprehensive set of Wild Food UK ‘Course Notes’ a few days after your course. This email will contain links and articles relating to the plants and mushrooms we discovered or discussed during the day.

Castle Bromwich Hall and Gardens has free parking, a courtyard cafe and toilet facilities. There is usually a charge to enter the gardens, but if you are attending a course with us we will cover the cost.

If the weather is less agreeable, we have the option to retreat under a canopy, protecting us from the elements, while still allowing us to enjoy the scenic gardens.

Across the day, Edith Holden enthusiast and collector,  Rachel Smith- Chopra, will be on hand to share her experiences and knowledge of  Edith Holden’s travels around Birmingham and Solihull.
