SUMMARY:WildFoodUK Foraging Course
DESCRIPTION:Foraging safely… Even here in the city\, Nature offers wonderful habitats and food for free. Join us and WildFoodUK for a fascinating stroll in the ‘urban countryside’. A first level course in foraging.\nCastle Bromwich Hall and Gardens represent a rare example of a 17th century Jacobean country house\, complete with its original garden setting and parkland. Situated only five miles from Birmingham City centre\, the hall is now in private ownership\, but 40 acres of historic garden and the parkland are managed by Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens Trust. The site contains a mosaic of habitats including formal gardens\, orchards\, woodland\, wetlands and grasslands making it ideal for all year round foraging! \nOur Foraging Courses begin with a short introduction to Wild Food UK\, what to expect from your day and a brief summary of the general countryside codes\, including our Foraging Code. \nHeading off at a leisurely pace\, your instructor will teach you how to safely identify the different species of edible and poisonous plants and mushrooms that you discover. This exploration will take about 2.5hrs\, during which we’ll take a break for a homemade refreshment\, such as our Hogweed & Wild Garlic Soup or Elderflower Champagne! \nThen it’s back to the meeting point for a tasty wild food meal. This will include a selection of foraged homemade treats created by your instructor\, and a dish made with what we have collected during the walk. \nAll of our food is seasonal\, so what you are served depends on what is growing at that time of year. In Spring we will be making use of the fresh wild greens and in Autumn\, the array of tasty wild mushrooms that the area has to offer. \nYou will receive a comprehensive set of Wild Food UK ‘Course Notes’ a few days after your course. This email will contain links and articles relating to the plants and mushrooms we discovered or discussed during the day. \nDates \n\nFriday 24th April (12-3.30pm)\nSunday 10th May (12.3.30pm)\nSaturday 11th July (10am- 1.30)\nSunday 16th Aug  (12-3.30pm)\n\nCastle Bromwich Hall and Gardens has free parking\, a courtyard cafe and toilet facilities. This summer you will be able to make and keep your very own willow basket at Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens.\nJoin local artist Ildiko Nagy and an intimate group of fellow learners as you are taught how to make a basket using time-honoured techniques. During the all day\, five-hour workshop will be guided through how to create a medium-small sized round basket following the stake and strand basketry technique. for a gentle and productive session … \nWe’ll be using brown willow and all tools will be provided. \nIdeal for anyone interested in losing themselves in a craft which would have been commonplace to our forebears. \nTickets £65 \nAll materials\, tools are provided. \nYour ticket also grants you unlimited tea and coffee provided in the workshop area AND 10% off food and drink from the cafe (voucher given at beginning of sesion). \nPlease arrive for 09:45 so that you can start in time for 10:00. \nYou’re welcome to also bring your own food\, if you wish.

DESCRIPTION:A Smashing start to Medieval Summer at the Gardens!\nJoin Birmingham Medieval Combat for a beginner’s class on Medieval Combat.\n£15 per adult (90 mins session) \nOther info: your ticket allows you to visit the Gardens all day\, from 10:30-16:30 so do take the opportunity to explore. \nThe class takes place as part of a special day of demonstration and shows at the Gardens. \nBirmingham Medieval Combat are offering the opportunity for 10 brave souls to get real ‘hands on’ experience of the techniques. \nThis hour and half beginners class will cover basic sword and shield work – see below for more details. \nOther info: your ticket allows you to visit the Gardens all day\, from 10:30-16:30 so do take the opportunity to explore. \nMORE DETAIL \nThere will only be 10 of you so you’ll get real hands-on delivery and expertise from these enthusiasts. \nIdeal photograph opportunity\, so do bring people to snap some good shots! Entry fees will apply to these. \nThey will ask each participant to sign a sports waiver\, and have reasonable clothing and footwear. There is a moderate degree of physical exertion as part of this session. They will cover the basics of stance\, sword and shield technique and counter attacking. This class will be tailored to the specific group on the day. \nGo on\, we all have the fantasy of being on the front lines of Agincourt or Bosworth! \nThe group will then lead observable demonstrations in an arena throughout the day\, which are open to all. \nTickets: 18+ \nAbout Birmingham Medieval Combat \nWe are pleased to welcome Birmingham Medieval Combat (BMC) to our walls\, to lead us in a session showcasing the battle skills of men-at-arms in the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Centuries. \nBMC is a full contact sports team competing in the sport of armoured MMA and Buhurt\, based on foot combat tournaments during the 14-15th Century\, similar to Jousts. Perfect for our Medieval Summer! \nYoung people’s interest in wildlife (or even in Harry Potter) just grows and grows.\nNow\, your young enthusiast has the opportunity to get close to these wonderful creatures and to learn how to hold them safely on the hand (with a glove on\, obviously!) \nOur adult Falconry and Owl sessions have a great following here in the Gardens and now Tora’s Falconry can offer small groups their own hands-on experience during the school holidays. \nWith just 12 child places per 90 minute session\, each child get an opportunity to learn about the birds\, see them fly and get a chance to fly a small owl or falcon. \nThese sessions are suitable for almost any age\, but we suggest at least 5 years or over .
